This is Eric ...
Each time our family has taken a road trip, we have created a blog to document our adventure. This year we are adding Twitter, Vine, Instagram and I'm sure Facebook to the mix of social media to share the adventure with friends and family.
I know very little about Twitter - but I will try to hashtag our posts with #spiveyjazz. I'm sure Sarah will let me know how I'm not doing it correctly. But I'm learning. You can follow me on twitter at eric.spivey.
I don't know if Vine has hashtags, although, I'm sure I'll learn soon enough. Vine is a video sharing app from Twitter that allows you to make 6 sec videos. It's the new thing in high school social media - or so I hear. It's not for the faint of heart, though. You will be surprised what teenagers will post online without thinking a second thought about it. So, I asked the girls tonight - what things do you want to add to our trip to make it fun. They suggested a Vine video for every state we enter. Along with a picture of us jumping off something, I'm sure. I have a vine, but no videos. I'll have to figure out how to share it.
I'm also sure there will be plenty of instagram photos as well. Instagram is the facebook for tweens. It allows them to share photos and follow famous folks and it stays pretty sane. Every time Sydney finds wi-fi expect an instagram photo to pop up somewhere.
For the old folks - facebook seems to be where I'm most comfortable. We will see what all we share - and what we don't.
And yes, we will also be posting travel blog updates to this blog site. The thing our family loves most about this - is that it allows us to instantly record what all we are doing - day to day. Then - we can simply go back to the blog and remember again all that we experienced. We have used the blog to develop our annual picture album at Christmas.
Finally - where does this Spivey Jazz name come from? It's the way I am attempting to approach our upcoming road trip. I don't' know a lot about music - and I was never any good at jazz. I don't have the personality for it - too linear. I know a little bit about it, though. Jazz starts somewhere and it ends somewhere. The players play in a certain environment - a certain key or pattern or theme or meolody. The rest, though, comes out in the moment. It's beautiful - even if I have a hard time connecting with it.
This is the kind of vacation adventure we are about to begin. I know that we will leave after 3 tomorrow when Marcia gets done on her last day of school. I know that we have to be in Charleston, SC on Monday, 6/10 at 3:00 pm to check Sarah into M-fuge. I know that our first destination will be Niagara Falls. When we get there - how long we stay, where we will stay - it is all up for grabs. I know we plan to visit boston. We have a place to stay in Long Island to spend some time in NYC. Marcia wants to visit Jamestown. All of these are the road markers - how we get there and what all we expereince both at the destinations and on the journey is yet to be determined.
My greatest desire on this trip is simply to enjoy my family as we break away from the routines of our lives and enjoy this moment - with our girls 16 and 12. This time will never be repeated. It's here then - it's gone.
I'm grateful to see what all God provides for us. I can already feel our family pulling together as we prepare to pull out. It makes me excited about the possibilities. I can hear the music playing - it's beautiful. Now, it's time to enjoy it.
I hope you enjoy our journey too.
